📈 The Kp index and geomagnetic storms

What the 0–9 Kp scale measures, how higher Kp pushes the aurora toward the equator, and how Kp 5+ maps to NOAA’s G1–G5 storm scale.

The planetary K-index (Kp) is a single number, from 0 to 9, that summarizes how disturbed Earth’s magnetic field is over a three-hour window. It is derived from a worldwide network of ground magnetometers and is quasi-logarithmic, so each step up represents a meaningfully larger disturbance. Kp 0–2 is quiet, 3–4 is unsettled to active, and 5 or above marks a geomagnetic storm.

Kp matters for aurora-chasers because it tracks how far the auroral oval expands toward the equator. At low Kp the oval hugs the poles; as Kp climbs, the oval widens and the lights become visible at progressively lower latitudes. A rough rule of thumb: each extra point of Kp brings the realistic viewing line several degrees of latitude further from the pole.

From Kp 5 upward, NOAA labels the disturbance a geomagnetic storm and maps it onto the G-scale: Kp 5 = G1 (minor), Kp 6 = G2 (moderate), Kp 7 = G3 (strong), Kp 8 = G4 (severe) and Kp 9 = G5 (extreme). The G-scale also flags the side effects of strong storms — possible swings in power grids, satellite operations, GPS accuracy and high-frequency radio.

Kp is a planet-wide average for a three-hour block, not a live local meter. It tells you the scale of activity, but a clear, dark sky pointed toward the pole at the right moment still decides whether you actually see anything. Treat a forecast Kp as the odds, not a guarantee.
