πŸ”­ How and when to see the aurora

Turning a forecast into a sighting β€” dark skies, the right direction, the best hours and seasons, and how much warning the forecast gives you.

Start with darkness. Light pollution is the aurora’s biggest enemy, so get well away from city glow to a site with an open view toward the pole β€” north in the Northern Hemisphere, south in the Southern. A clear sky is essential, since the aurora sits far above the clouds, and a bright Moon washes out faint displays, so the days around a new Moon are best.

Timing matters as much as location. Auroral activity tends to peak in the hours around local midnight, so the late-evening-to-pre-dawn window is prime. You also need real night: near the summer solstice, high-latitude skies never fully darken, so autumn through early spring is the practical aurora season. The weeks around the March and September equinoxes are statistically more storm-prone, a modest but real boost.

Use the forecast to decide whether it is worth the trip. NOAA SWPC and the OVATION aurora model estimate where the oval will sit, while spacecraft parked at the L1 point about 1.5 million km sunward β€” DSCOVR and ACE β€” sample the incoming solar wind. Because that vantage point sits ahead of Earth, it typically gives roughly 30 to 90 minutes of lead time once a gust of solar wind is detected, enough to step outside before it hits.

Set expectations for your eyes and your camera. To the unaided eye a modest aurora can look like a pale gray-green arc; the vivid pinks and reds in photos come from a camera’s longer exposure. A few-second exposure on a tripod, with a wide lens and high ISO, will reveal color and structure you cannot quite catch by eye β€” and confirm that the faint glow on the horizon really is the lights.
