Almost every point on BirdPulse begins as a checklist β a birderβs record of what they saw and heard on one outing. A checklist lists the species, a count of individuals for each, where and when it was made, and the βeffortβ behind it: how long they watched, how far they walked, and whether they were trying to record everything they detected. Submitted to eBird, those checklists become a continuously updating, worldwide picture of bird distribution.
This is citizen science at scale. Hundreds of thousands of volunteer observers contribute, which gives a reach no professional survey could match β but it also means the data inherits human habits. Records cluster where people live, near roads and trails, on weekends and in fine weather. To keep quality up, eBird runs automated filters and a network of regional reviewers who flag and check unusual reports before they enter the dataset.
βHotspotsβ are shared public birding locations β a lakeshore, a migrant-trap park, a sewage works famous for shorebirds β that many observers report from under a single name. Pooling checklists at a hotspot makes its species list and seasonal patterns far richer than any one visit, and it lets a placeβs migration rhythm emerge from thousands of separate outings.
Rare or out-of-range birds get special handling. When a report is βnotableβ β a species unexpected for that place or season β it is flagged for review, and observers are encouraged to add photos, audio or notes as evidence. That review is what keeps a single mistaken identification from distorting the map, and it is why confirmed rarities are worth trusting.
